Tragic history unites the House

The federal government delivered yesterday a profound, comprehensive and, by all appearances, sincere parliamentary apology for a century of residential school nightmares inflicted on thousands of native children, finally giving some meaning to the money it has pledged to victims.

After a lone aboriginal stood high in the spectator seating waving an eagle feather to bless what was to come, native leaders walked onto the floor escorted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to an all-party standing ovation.

Euphoria broke out in the galleries above, where drums rumbled and former students or their families roared their approval – and damn all to that parliamentary prohibition against public noise in the Commons. And then … silence. www.nationalpost.com
