The Trudeau Stories ~Live Theatre

August 20, 2009

In 1985, while she was a student at the National Theatre School in Montreal, Brooke Johnson became friends with Pierre Elliott Trudeau. It had been a year and a half since he’d stepped down as Prime Minister, and now he was walking to work, putting cereal bowls on cartoon placemats, washing dishes and making peanut-butter on toast. He was no longer doing pirouettes behind the Queen but sometimes he was hanging around with Brooke, sliding down ice-covered staircases on Mount Royal.

Through reminiscences, journal entries and correspondence, Brooke brings to life the story of a remarkable friendship. This private insight into the man and the times as seen through the eyes of a passionate artist is not to be missed.

At once vital and charming; poignant and very funny, Trudeau Stories is about friendship and loss…and about who the heck we think we are.

“an unexpectedly engaging memoir – like turning the pages of a live snapshot album & a maximum of craft but a minimum of artifice. It’s delightful” – National Post

When the fancy designer Jean-Biff Gaultier swaggers onto the scene, the only one who can see through his special cloth is Robin, the castle’s potato scrubber. But the grown-ups won’t listen to her. Rita Chiarelli

September 12, 2009
Times:8:00pm – 10:00pm

“Rita Chiarelli& a voice that can growl at her demons or soar with the angels, a gift for lyric, an ear for melody and the heart to combine them.” She is an accomplished singer-songwriter, a gifted vocalist and a skilled musician. Add to that a warm persona and a fine sense of humour and you have all the ingredients for an outstanding performer.

Dubbed the goddess of Canadian blues by CBC’s Shelagh Rogers, Chiarelli’s voice – that three octave range garners – all the attention! But Rita’s songwriting is also outstanding; three of her four JUNO nominations have been for albums consisting largely of original material.

George Canyon

September 20, 2009
Times:7:30pm – 10:00pm

You can go ahead and just dance to the music of George Canyon, if that’s what you want. He’s a country neo-traditionalist par excellence, producing music situated somewhere between the bright and studio-tooled Nashville ideal and something a little older, with a voice that can soar with emotion or linger in a heavy bottom-end that feels like a kick in the chest from a faith healer. It’s instant.

Justin Hines – acoustic/folk/roots

September 24, 2009
Times:8:00pm – 10:00pm

In talking about his music, singer-songwriter Justin Hines says, “Honestly, I don’t remember wanting to do anything else, period.” That sense of it being something as essential as breathing emanates from every track on his soul-searching debut album, Sides. Listening to it is an experience akin to that mystical phenomenon of everyday life when you meet someone new but, somehow, feel as if you’ve known them forever. And, while there’s a familiarity, a timelessness to Justin’s music, it’s also marked by a lean, contemporary sound and distinctly postmodern sensibility as direct and authentic as the ideas and emotions the Toronto native expresses with his literate song craft.

“Sides…a potent combination of emotionally eloquent lyrics and strong, accessible melodies.” -The Globe & Mail
