Special 1st Anniversary Gathering May 8 at Site 41 Simcoe County
Posted by John Malloy on 05/04/2010

It has almost been one year since a remarkable event that began an incredible journey. Just a year ago Maude Barlow and the Council of Canadians with the Site 41 group hosted a special ‘Walk for Water’. It was a special spring day full of hope for the future and all seemed committed to make a difference. A huge turnout, Dale Goldhawk and many other media representatives, & musical guests arrived.
The inspiring speeches, the huge volume of people and the knowledge that this might be the last stand was inspiring. The last chance to protect our water and our children’s water. People from all colours and creeds, cottagers, the agricultural community and people from near and far joined hands together Shoulder to Shoulder.
First Nations people at the walk felt it was their sacred duty to protect the earth-to speak for the water. The Five Anishinaabe Kweag decided to camp out for the weekend and respectfully asked locals for a small parcel of land. The Firekeepers, youth and children joined them. The weekend turned out to be 137 days. They stayed during terrible storm events, floods and cold temperatures. Dust and noise from County of Simcoe construction, Police raids, and many stressful situations occurred. Their commitment and dedication impressed us all. On May 8th it is the 1st Anniversary of there arrival.
Please come Saturday May 8th to Site 41 for Water Ceremony and fellowship. The event will begin at 2 pm and run til 4:30 pm. Concession 2 Tiny Township, east of County Road 6.
Friendship, Music and Celebration-bring a chair, a refillable water bottle and please join us. We look forward to seeing our many friends.
