Elmvale District High School Students without Borders : Nunavut Exchange
Students fly north to Arviat, Nunavut May 18th
The countdown is on! The Elmvale District High School [EDHS] Grade 11 College English class of semester 1 will be headed north on May 18th, 2010. The class had been writing letters to a group of students from Arviat, Nunavut. One letter lead to another, and before they new it the students were planning their very own exchange visit!
On Tuesday, May 18th at 7:00am 13 EDHS Students will be boarding a bus headed to Pearson International Airport in Toronto for their 5 day visit in the North. In one day of travel the students will touch down in Winnipeg and Churchill, Manitoba all before they reach their destination of Arviat…a small, fly-in, Inuit community located in Southern Nunavut.
In Arviat the students will participate in a variety of cultural activities such as: dog sledding, caribou hunting, ice fishing, drum dancing, throat singing, jewelry making and taking part in a traditional Inuit feast. The students will be living with members in the community and attending school with their Pen Pals.
On Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 11 students from Arviat will be arriving here, in our little corner of the world for 5 days. There will be a community welcome pancake dinner for the students on Wednesday the 26th at the high school (please R.S.V.P. to the school at 705-322-2201). Some of the cultural activities we have planned include: Lalonde’s Maple Syrup, EDHS Relay 4 Life, The Elmvale Jungle Zoo, bowling at the Springwater Lanes, Dinner at Life’s A Slice, Eden Crest Farms, a trip to Wasaga Beach, dinner at Boston Pizza, a visit to the CN Tower and Canada’s Wonderland, a tour of Georgian College, a shopping spree at Georgian Mall and a visit to Enaahtig Healing Lodge & Learning Centre.
This exchange visit is going to be a fabulous opportunity for the students and their communities to share and learn about each other’s traditions and cultures. Such an experience would not have been possible without the help of others and all of the participants would like to thank EVERYONE for their unending support and donations. Your generosity has helped the group meet their goal of $10, 000 in just 3 months!
