Never say never,” quipped singer/songstress Rose Cora Perry (formerly of Anti-Hero/HER), in a recent interview, when asked to comment on the subject matter of her highly anticipated upcoming solo debut. It seems that for this former hard rocking frontwoman, known for her wild stage antics and in-your-face attitude, that cutting an acoustic disc that depicts her vulnerable side was the farthest thing imaginable from what she felt her career held in store, just a mere few years ago. But as she’s quick to point out, “a lot can change in a few moments, a few days, let alone a few years.” And a lot most certainly has changed for the Canadian-born entertainer, including undergoing a highly traumatic breakup with her fiancé and prior songwriting partner, as well as a near-fatal experience of a close family member. Despite the adversities and melodrama she’s faced as of late, Perry remains intent on pursuing her musical dreams and acting as a positive rolemodel:

“I write music to help others – to provoke thought, to inspire, to show listeners that someone else out there gets them, gets what they’re going through, and that everything is going to be okay. Music has always been central to my life, especially when it comes to healing. I only wish to offer back to the world with my art what the art of others have done for me.

Not only offering a previously unexplored esoteric piece of herself to her audiences, Perry’s upcoming release, Off Of the Pages, also pays homage to all of the artists who’ve come before her, and touched her in a significant way. From Loreena McKennitt to Metallica, Perry’s eclectic taste in music is well-demonstrated through the thoughtful construction of both her melodies and lyrics. Always one to tackle timely social issues she feels need addressing, Perry’s latest takes the listener through a journey of heartbreak, redemption, identity struggle, and confrontation of abuse, but importantly makes a point of leaving listeners with a sense of hope.

Released via Perry’s own HER Records, a feminist-oriented label devoted to furthering the place of Canadian women in rock, Off Of the Pages is a 100% D.I.Y. album. Continuing to embrace the punk ethos for which she is so well known, Perry is deliberately taking a political stance against the music biz’s current illegal downloading dilemma by restricting the availability of her latest. Off Of the Pages can ONLY be obtained directly through Perry herself by donation; all proceeds derived from its sale are going into a development fund for a youth psychology educational program, entitled “MusicSaves”, that Perry intends on launching in the next few months.

Recorded live off the floor by Denis Gauthier, owner and operator of Second Records as well as one half of the famed acoustic duo, The InBetween, the feel to Perry’s disc is raw, unrestrained, and organic. In fact, Perry went on to relay that, at times during the recording, she plunged herself so deeply back into the moment(s) of her initial inspiration that it brought tears to her eyes.

In addition to Perry’s musical endeavours, she continues to work part-time as a freelance entertainment journalist, and music industry advice expert. Perry is also the official spokeswoman for MindYourMind.ca’s Guidance and Learning Strategies curriculum: an interactive educational program geared toward bettering the mental health of grade nine and ten Ontarians; a project to which she feels personally connected.

Off Of the Pages will be released officially at Perry’s hometown’s annual music awards ceremony on Wednesday June 9th at the Wolf Performance Hall (London, Ontario) where she is slated as one of the special guest performers.

For her fans who aren’t quite ready to let go of their teenager animosity and head-banging, she assures listeners that they have not seen the end of her distorted guitar wailing days:

Think of it (her acoustic album) as an experiment in modern sound,” she says, “I’m deliberately pushing myself outside of my element, and trying something completely different. People may love it. They may hate it. But it’s where I am right now as an artist, and I’ve gotta be true to my heart. All I can do is put it out there and hope for the best.

With a proven track record of success, despite Perry’s humble protestations, industry buzz circling her upcoming debut has already begun. Are you ready?
