Hot dog cart stays

A downtown hot dog cart is allowed on public property.

Municipal staff reported to Meaford council that a bylaw from the Town of Meaford had been discovered that does allow a hot dog cart to be set up on public property. The town implemented a Hawkers and Peddlers bylaw in 1992 that requires a $300 license fee for businesses like a hot dog cart to open downtown.

At council’s previous meeting Don and Kathy Evanson approached council about setting up a hot dog cart on public property next to the Big Apple. Council asked staff to look into the matter.

Since that time the Evanson’s have set up and are operating their business on property owned by Rice’s Home Hardware.

Clerk Pam Fettes reported to council that the municipality has no reason to deny the hot dog cart a license under the bylaw provided the provisions of the bylaw are followed…
