A Wasaga Beach icon has died.
The community is mourning Paul Vozoris who died Sunday at the age of 64.
Emergency crews were called at 10 a.m. July 25 when Vozoris was discovered on the side of the road at Mosley Street and 18th Street.
Fire Chief Mike McWilliam said vital signs were absent.
When emergency crews arrived, bystanders were already performing CPR.
“It appears he suffered a heart attack,” said McWilliam.
Vozoris’s sister Marilee Kidd said her brother was buried in the family plot in Thornbury yesterday in a private service.
She said there has been an outpouring of condolences from Wasaga Beach and members of the community are welcome to attend a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Tues., Aug. 3 at Grace Bible Fellowship.
Kidd said people will be invited to share stories and memories of Vozoris, which she plans to compile in a book as a tribute to her brother.
Kidd describes Vozoris as a kind of year-round Santa Claus because the bearded man could often be seen walking along the side of the road wearing layers of colourful clothing and a blanket tied at the waist with woven belts. Kidd said he would give away anything he had, even sharing extra food with the dogs he met along his regular route.
“Paul had more friends than I would ever know of. So many people reached out to show kindness to Paul. And I thank each one of you for making Paul feel welcome and at home in the Wasaga community. It was feeling that he belonged and was loved and accepted that helped him to live a peaceful, contented and happy life in his last 20 years living at Wasaga Beach,” said Kidd.
She said Vozoris had a loving family who always provided for his needs. They arranged for him to take meals at Little Marina Ristorante.
“I miss him,” said Little Marina owner Lucia Ferrazzo.
For 21 years Vozoris ate three meals a day at Ferrazzo’s restaurant…
