Water Vote at the UN

Enough hand wringing over the water vote at the UN!  I am pleased that Canada is offside.  It sounds so reasonable: a resolution declaring “safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right.” Just sign on the dotted line! But it is not that simple, not for a country that owns nine per cent of the world’s fresh water supply.

Not in dispute is the desirability of clean water for everyone.  What is in dispute, and suspect, are among other things: the prediction made by the World Bank/IMF that there will be “a dire global shortfall of forty percent by 2030” (the guesswork fits into their agenda), the appalling record of the World Bank/IMF, and the full knowledge of a growing number of citizens that the World Bank/IMF just wants your money, and your sovereignty, and your water.  Hold onto your breeches Canada!

I am pleased that our Canadian leaders are showing reticence, and examining the fine print.  Jean Chrétien’s Liberals gave the thumbs down to the resolution in 2003. I am pleased the Harper Conservatives are showing caution now.  Only fools rush in.
