A group of women on the Outreach Committee of Meaford United Church have created a garden within a 35 by 40 foot fenced plot on Blake Street.
The four women as well as a volunteer have planted lettuce, peas, beans, beets, carrots, cucumbers, cabbage, peas, potatoes, peppers, squash, tomatoes and turnips. They tend the plot on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and noon.
They are currently harvesting onions, lettuce other greens, zucchini, tomatoes and beans. This harvest is donated to the Golden Town Outreach Food Bank located in the basement of Church of the Nazarene at 34 Trowbridge, Meaford. The Food Bank serves about 180 people each month.
As part of their outreach program, the group hosted a workshop at the Meaford United Church featuring:
Anastasia Sparling of Beaver Valley Flower Farm who shared tips on garden organization & companion gardening;
Terry Chappelle from Bayview Organic Farm who demonstrated how to set up vertical gardening frames. This is especially good for growing tomatoes and increasing productivity. It’s also a good way to garden if you have small garden plot;
David Port provided composting tips.
