Almost half of the Bluewater District School Board’s trustees are sure to be replaced after the Oct. 25 municipal election.
Four of the nine current trustees have said they won’t run, including Chairwoman Jennifer Yenssen.
So far there are no candidates in two of nine areas of the board and an election is set in only two.
With a little over two weeks until nominations close on Sept. 10, a candidate has yet to come forward in Yenssen’s Brockton/South Bruce area and in the Southgate/Grey Highlands district represented now by Trustee Cindy Aitken.
Both are trustees with long experience.
Aitken is leaving education politics to seek a teaching degree and eventually a classroom position.
Yenssen announced more than four years ago that this would be her final term after 17 years as a trustee with Bluewater and before that the Bruce County board.
She said she’s surprised no one in her area has declared an interest, given the long lead time.
“I thought by now someone would have come forward,” Yenssen said recently. “I’m not quite sure why no one has done so.”
It could relate to the controversy surrounding the board over the past 18 months, during which public criticism over a perceived lack of transparency led to an extensive policy review along with heightened and blic scrutiny, Yenssen said.
Saugeen Shores/Arran-Elderslie Trustee Ross King is also calling it quits after one term in office. He said it was a “challenging” time.
