John Edwards -

A fixture at the Town of Collingwood for more than a quarter-century will be leaving his post.

Peter Dunbar, who has worked as the director of leisure services for 27 years, is retiring next Tuesday.

Dunbar came to the municipality in 1983 after spending five years as recreation director for the Town of Wasaga Beach.

Dunbar was raised in Toronto and received a hockey scholarship to the University of Michigan.

During his tenure, Dunbar oversaw the management of facilities and special events in the community.

He said one event that stands out was the 1997 Special Olympic World Winter Games. He said in 1996, he and then Mayor Doug Garbutt attended the Special Olympic World Summer Games.

Dunbar said he and Garbutt visited the White House and the United Nations to speak abut the event in Collingwood.
