Christmas is a time of year when we generate a lot of waste.

If you want to reduce your waste foot-print try the following:

1. Instead of “stuff”, give presents that involve experiences, time, attention, memories and joy:

*theatre or concert tickets
*dinner certificates at a special restaurant
*an evening at the bowling alley
*museum passes
*a day at the cross-country ski resort
*coupons offering your services for babysitting, weeding, painting, lawn mowing ….
*an excursion to see the fall colours of Muskoka
*classes at the local community college to develop a new interest

2.  Give gifts that are consumable.

*a bottle of expensive wine

*homemade cookies
*homemade candles and soaps

3.     Wrap your gifts in reusable cloth bags, fabric scraps, old socks, pillowcases or newspaper.

4.     E-mail your holiday wishes instead of sending cards.

5.    Shop at used bookstores, antique dealers or consignment stores.

6.    Make consumable decorations such as gingerbread houses or popcorn garlands which can be fed to the birds afterwards.

7.    Avoid disposable plates and cutlery at large dinners with family and friends.
