Marvin’s Room runs from March 22nd – 25th

Rehearsals and behind the scene work are progressing well for the Meaford Community Theatre production of Marvin’s Room, to be presented at Meaford Hall during the third week in March. Featuring a cast of local actors, Marvin’s Room is the story of one family dealing with many of the challenging issues facing our society today – the demands of aging and ailing family members; the dynamics of rebellious teenagers; the heartache and humour as they discover their love for each other. This play challenges the cast, as it will the audience. Director Gary Simon says, “I hope the audience will be moved to tears as well as laughter.”

Marvin’s Room runs from March 22^nd – 25^th and tickets for reserved seats are now on sale at the Meaford Hall box office for $15, and $5 for students.

A stunning display of quilts:

Quilt Exhibit Friendship Circle Quilters, until February 4

The Meaford Hall Galleries present the perfect backdrop this stunning display of quilts. The display consists of almost 40 quilts both large and small available for viewing until February 5. In the collection are works by each individual artist in the group of about 20 quilters. Included in the exhibit will be hand-quilted, pieced, appliquéd, and machine quilted works from artisans aged 50 to 90 who reside in Meaford and the surrounding countryside. All quilts are brand new, with most being available for sale.

Johnny Max is a soulful singer/songwriter whose respect, and passion for all types of music is evident. Over the past decade Johnny has recorded some of the best music this country has produced. His first three CD releases (Long Gone Train/2000,In The Doghouse Again!/2002, Ride And Roll/ 2005) firmly established Max in the Blues idiom.

It was his fourth CD, (Juno nominated ‘A Lesson I’ve Learned’), that Johnny added to his Blues sensibilities. Meaford Community Theatre is pleased to announce the call for auditions for Marvin’s Room, to be performed at the Meaford Hall March 22nd – 25th, 2012. Written by Scott McPherson, winner of various awards, Marvin’s Room is the story of one family’s journey through humour and heartache to the discovery of their ultimate love for each other. It reveals the fears that paralyze us and the courage that ultimately allows us to accomplish what we never thought we could even attempt. The play examines the differences that can sometimes drive a family apart and the ties that bind them together.

With a cast of 9 there are challenging roles for both female and male adults ages 30 and up, and roles for 2 adolescents ages 12 to 18, male and female.

Being involved in a community theatre production requires a commitment of 2 evenings a week for the 10 weeks of rehearsals but it is always a rewarding experience. New friendships are made, there is the excitement and thrill of performing on stage and new skills and interests are developed.

There are also positions available on the production crew, people working behind the scenes to make the sets and costumes, manage the props and promote the play. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to help and be involved.

Auditions for Marvin’s Room will be held at the Meaford Hall on Thursday, December 15th and Friday, December 16th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

GBACA Annual Christmas Show & Sale

Collingwood Public Library, 55 Ste. Marie Street, Collingwood, ON

GBACA is an Art Association created in the early 1980′s by the Blue Mountain School of Landscape Painting. They wanted other artists to know what was happening in their own “world of art”. It was hoped that the artists might create various art activities. Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Georgian Bay and the Blue Mountains, this rapidly growing group of talented artists now has regular shows which allow the GBACA members an opportunity to display and sell work to the public. Our current membership is 170 talented artists. GBACA also sponsors an annual show and sale each August in Collingwood, Ontario. This popular art and craft event attracts exhibitors and art lovers from all over Ontario (see “Events” page).

Betty Bishop says she started painting in oil when she retired and considers herself a glorified Sunday painter. She is basically self-taught, although she studied at the Art Students’ League in New York for six months. Betty says her main claim to fame was to be included in the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition in 1995 and to have had a painting hung in the lobby of the Chelsea Hotel in New York in 1993.

Betty moved to Collingwood in 2010 and has been doing life drawing at Go Figure and has recently joined the Marsh Street Painters in Clarksburg. She says that Collingwood is a great place to live if you are interested in painting as there are many wonderful artists here and they are more than willing to share their knowledge.

Emilie-Claire Barlow is the featured performance on stage and the Unique Boutique Fundraiser is held in the Galleries. A few years ago, CBC (Canada Now) called Emilie-Claire “the next best thing in jazz”, but she is hardly a newcomer to the music scene. Barlow’s first album Sings was released in 1998. She has received three nominations for Canada’s Juno Awards and was named “Female Vocalist of the Year” at the 2008 National Jazz Awards. Recent Works – Painting & Photography Kerry Riley & David Johnston

December 6 – January 7

David has returned to painting after a career of teaching at Ryerson University. He studied art & design at Winchester School of Art and Central School of Art in London, England. His images have been rendered in hard edge watercolour as well as silk screen but he now concentrates on acrylic painting with airbrust. David’s paintings combine stylized objective imagery imposted on randomly controlled colour fileds. Kerry has been dabbling in the creative process since studying applied art and design at Ryerson University. History, architecture, and nature inspire her images in drawing, photography and mixed media collages. Both Kerry and David have resided in Meaford for over 20 years. Opening reception Saturday December 10 from 5 to 7pm.

The fourth and final of the 2011 series of Visiting Artists. This show features clay, porcelain, stoneware and glass from this group of very talented artisans.

Fusion: The Ontario Clay and Glass Associations Biennial Exhibition’s, called “Fireworks”, have traveled the province since the formation of the association. Fusion grew out of the Ontario Potters Association established in 1976.

Fireworks 2011 will represent an outstanding selection of Canadian ceramic work, primarily from Ontario. The Fireworks 2011 exhibition will be the latest in the series of exhibitions mounted by the dedicated volunteers who have served the organization for the last thirty years.

There is no mistaking Brad Roberts’ voice. He may look like an average guy but then he opens his mouth and his majestic baritone voice immediately conjures fond memories of such Crash Test Dummies hits at “Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, Mmm” and “Superman.” Perhaps best remembered for the acerbic folk rock sound of 1991′s The Ghosts That Haunt Me and 1993′s God Shuffled His Feet, there have nonetheless been enough hits for the band over the years to merit a couple of greatest hits packages. Through it all, the band with Roberts at the helm has touched on funk and soul, folk, electronic music and even Christmas tunes. Yet it is Roberts’ voice and offbeat lyrical sensibility that have been this beloved band’s calling cards since their founding twenty years ago.

Juno Award winner and CBC radio announcer Molly Johnson has earned her reputation as one of Canada’s greatest voices. She has rocked standing-room only audiences in nightclubs and bars from coast-to-coast as a pop artist, and seduced the patrons of salons and lounges with her luscious interpretations of jazz and blues standards. She has regaled royalty, as well as having performed for Nelson Mandela and Quincy Jones. In 2008 she was honoured with becoming an Officer of The Order Of Canada. On November 11th, 2008 Molly released her fourth full length album; a long awaited record of standards entitled Lucky. She went on to win the 2009 JUNO Award for Best Vocal Jazz Album. 2011 Meaford International Film Festival, Meaford’s biggest event of the summer

MIFF is back!

We would like to invite you to the 2011 Meaford International Film Festival, Meaford’s biggest event of the summer. MIFF runs from Thursday, September 1 through to Sunday, September 4, and is always a great way to celebrate the (almost) end of summer.

Once again, MIFF offers award-winning films from around the world. Our line up this year includes a Iranian film so powerful that its makers have been sentenced to prison, an extraordinary look at a little-known aspect of China’s economic miracle, an inspiring film from Africa based on a real story and, once again, the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film.

Wrap up the evening by walking the red carpet to a MIFF party, with food by one of Meaford’s outstanding caterers.

Ticket pricing has been held to last year’s levels, with an early-bird discount for people buying tickets on or before August 13.
